Losartan: a medicine to treat high blood pressure

Some drugs can affect your blood levels of other drugs you use, which may increase side effects or make the medicines less effective. Levothyroxine comes as a tablet and a capsule to take by mouth. It usually is taken once a day on an empty stomach, 30 minutes to 1 hour before breakfast. It usually is taken once a day in the morning after breakfast or twice a day after breakfast and lunch.

Take it as directed on the prescription label at the same time every day. This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions. Do not take losartan unless it has been prescribed to you by a health care provider. Losartan may also be used for other conditions as determined by your health care provider.

7 Renal Impairment

No clinically losartan: medlineplus drug information significant drug interactions have been found in studies of losartan potassium with hydrochlorothiazide, digoxin, warfarin, cimetidine and phenobarbital. However, rifampin has been shown to decrease the AUC of losartan and its active metabolite by 30% and 40%, respectively. Fluconazole, an inhibitor of cytochrome P450 2C9, decreased the AUC of the active metabolite by approximately 40%, but increased the AUC of losartan by approximately 70% following multiple doses.

In patients taking losartan potassium tablets during pregnancy, perform serial ultrasound examinations to assess the intra-amniotic environment. Fetal testing may be appropriate, based on the week of gestation. If oligohydramnios is observed, discontinue losartan potassium tablets, unless it is considered lifesaving for the mother. Patients and physicians should be aware, however, that oligohydramnios may not appear until after the fetus has sustained irreversible injury. Using this medicine with any of the following medicines may cause an increased risk of certain side effects, but using both drugs may be the best treatment for you.

The following information includes only the average doses of this medicine. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so. Many patients who have high blood pressure will not notice any signs of the problem. It is very important that you take your medicine exactly as directed and that you keep your appointments with your doctor even if you feel well.

  • Monitor renal function periodically in patients receiving losartan and NSAID therapy.
  • Appropriate studies performed to date have not demonstrated pediatric-specific problems that would limit the usefulness of losartan to treat high blood pressure in children 6 years of age and older.
  • Tell your doctor if you drink or have ever drunk large amounts of alcohol, if you have malnutrition (the body lacks the nutrients needed for good health), and if you have or have ever had liver disease or extremely low levels of sodium in your blood.

Does Losartan interact with my other drugs?

Losartan inhibits the pressor effect of angiotensin II (as well as angiotensin I) infusions. A dose of 100 mg inhibits the pressor effect by about 85% at peak with 25 to 40% inhibition persisting for 24 hours. Removal of the negative feedback of angiotensin II causes a doubling to tripling in plasma renin activity and consequent rise in angiotensin II plasma concentration in hypertensive patients.

Why is this medication prescribed?

  • Increases in serum lithium concentrations and lithium toxicity have been reported during concomitant administration of lithium with angiotensin II receptor antagonists.
  • Do not stop taking losartan without talking to your doctor.
  • The Components of Primary Endpoint (as a first event) counts only the events that define the primary endpoint, while the Secondary Endpoints count all first events of a particular type, whether or not they were preceded by a different type of event.
  • Losartan is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure in adults and children at least 6 years old.
  • If you become pregnant while you are taking candesartan, stop taking candesartan and call your doctor immediately.

Analysis of age, gender, and race subgroups of patients showed that men and women, and patients over and under 65, had generally similar responses. Losartan potassium was effective in reducing blood pressure regardless of race, although the effect was somewhat less in Black patients (usually a low-renin population). Coadministration of losartan with other drugs that raise serum potassium levels may result in hyperkalemia. Losartan may cause low blood pressure in people with low levels of fluids or salt.

Usual Adult Dose for Diabetic Nephropathy

The usual starting dose is 50 mg of losartan potassium tablet once daily. In patients with mild-to-moderate hepatic impairment the recommended starting dose of losartan potassium tablets is 25 mg once daily. Losartan potassium tablets has not been studied in patients with severe hepatic impairment see Use in Special Populations (8.8) and Clinical Pharmacology (12.3). Losartan potassium tablets have not been studied in patients with severe hepatic impairment see Use in Specific Populations (8.8) and Clinical Pharmacology (12.3).

The pharmacist can prepare a liquid form of this medication for your child. Learn the brand name and generic name of your medication. Triamterene is used in combination with other diuretics to treat high blood pressure.

See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of ingredients in losartan potassium tablets. • Do not take losartan potassium tablets if you have diabetes and are taking a medicine called aliskiren to reduce blood pressure. Medicines are sometimes prescribed for conditions that are not mentioned in patient information leaflets. Closely observe neonates with histories of in utero exposure to losartan potassium tablets for hypotension, oliguria, and hyperkalemia. In neonates with a history of in utero exposure to losartan potassium tablets, if oliguria or hypotension occurs, support blood pressure and renal perfusion. Exchange transfusions or dialysis may be required as a means of reversing hypotension and replacing renal function.

Losartan is also used to treat kidney disease in people who have type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood) and high blood pressure. Triamterene is used alone or with other medications to treat edema (fluid retention; excess fluid held in body tissues) caused by various conditions, including liver and heart disease. Triamterene is in a class of medications called diuretics (‘water pills’).

Triamterene may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
